Yes I think 1 e4 is the best choice for a program.
1 e4 leads to tactics which computers handle well. For example Fischer played 1
e4 because he wanted tactical situations. 1 d4 and 1 c4 require more
positional maneuvering at which humans are still superior. 1 c4 may
resemble the Sicilian but apparently Junior didnt do well. The variation
that you quoted ( 2 d4 )is a dinosaur that is not on the cutting edge but
one cannot expect a computer to perform well without a good opening book.
As to the next series the ideal way a 1 f4 game would progress is 1...c5 2 e4
which transposes to Grand Prix Attack. If one wants to test how engines
respond when taken out of 1 e4 situations the question is: What is the
best 1 d4 defence for a computer?
