Are the files on the Restoration disk corrupt? _Exactly_ this has happened to me; it means that the Registry has become corrupt :( Fortunately, Windows keeps a backup of the Registry and, to restore it, you need to use the Recovery Console. This gives the details of how to get into it: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307654 Once you're into it you need to: - go to the directory flagged in the error message cd \windows\system32\config - backup (the corrupt) 'default', 'software' and 'system' copy default default.zzz copy software software.zzz copy system system.zzz - replace these corrupt copies with (the hopefully OK) 'default.bak', 'software.bak' and 'system.bak' copy default.bak default copy software.bak software copy system.bak system - reboot If you don't feel confident about doing this _don't do it_; if you do it and it doesn't work, a reinstall is called for :( Alastair
