Jeroen,I have great respect for you. But also I am not so sure that applying a cost-benefit analysis to purchasing a new operating system for an old machine is a twist at all. While you may think otherwise, I think it's a necessary component of advising anyone to make changes. I did not even raise the spector of which 16 bit chess programs Joe would have to give up in order to play MP3s on is laptop in the latest style( that's what WMP9 is after all, MP3 player with some copyright protection), because they won't work in the XP kernel---like dos rebel, battlechess, old fritz engines.
