It's evaluation is not about material score for position but about possibility of mate. For example if white does not control squares near the black king then it is clear without searching that white cannot mate in one move because one move is not going to get control of enough squares near the king. I believe that it may even evaluate no possibility of mate in 2 without searching in some cases. Uri
