His hard, fast living (mostly smoking and alcohol) wore down his body and he enjoyed less than robust health after his mid 20's. He suffered his fist heat attack before he was 30 and he had a kidney removed at the age of 32. IMO, His best games were played before 1962 while he was under the age of 25. There is no doubt IMO, that if Tal had better health and took care of his body a little more (no smoking and drinking) - he perhaps would gone down as one of the top 3 players that ever played instead of one of the top 15 or so that ever played. For play the under the age of 25, perhaps he had no equal. He defeated WC Mikhail Botvinnik 12 ½ to 8 ½ a the age of 23. This was not a welcomed development in the USSR at the time as Botvinnik was considered a favorite son by the Communist party. . A final testament to his playing strength - he is one of two players (the other - Efim Geller) that had a plus score against Bobby Fischer with at least 10 games played. BTW, In Curacco 1962, when he was 25 he had to withdraw due to ill health, the only GM to visit him in the hospital was Fischer.
