Crafty, for example, was suggesting Nxc3 instead, with a slightly + score for white (+.22 after 14 plies). I think the problem after that is that Kasparov went into the line where he won an exchange, but lost the c-pawn in doing so, ending up +1.0, but in a position that is probably impossible to win if something doesn't break tactically. IE KR vs KBP doesn't go anywhere at all. I think he just had a strong positional edge after the Nxf2, but no analysis I saw from computers or GM players was convincing that white was winning after that. Why black chose to open the f-file in the face of its king is a bit of a mystery of course, but then there didn't seem to be any reall good way to exploit it long-term...
