Not necessarily.  Being a nerd is a state of mind... an attitude.
It is about more than simply being intellectual and smart. It is about
being comfortable with yourself and enjoying your intellectual side.
Simply playing chess is not enough...  If chess is an activity you
enjoy, enjoy it without worrying what others think.... only then
can you truly call yourself a nerd.

Please note that I look upon being a nerd as a good thing!  And be
careful not to confuse being a nerd (intellectual, smart, comfortable
with oneself) with being a geek (perhaps a nerd but also anti-social).
