The files are looked for but it is not clear to me if the program really uses
them by default. Under the CP native gui you have to select an EOC file to have
this feature neabled.

In general they are an EOC (a sort of encyclopedia of chess for the openings),
i.e. a reference db of positions from games to be used aside the opening book.
It is not necessary to use it to have an opening book, but if it is used it can
improve the opening play.
