E.g. any combination of five moves is executed mentally: the only difference is that you are sit in front of the board, but often the board view disturbs the players calculation" (...) This witness from Dr Tarrasch is a proof that the game is represented at a relatively abstract level , where the pieces identities, to not talk about their phisycal attributes, are not relevant at all.
