I think that no part of a chess program exists in isolation. I bet that in all
of the top programs, the author has a good overall system where each part of the
program works well to compliment the other parts. They have a good overall
philosophy and try to make all of the parts support that philosophy.

I wouldn't be suprised if Frans Morsch or Christophe Theron, or any other author
of a top commercial engine, told you a few of their "secrets" and it didn't help
your engine at all, because it probably fits well into their overall system,
while it may not fit into yours.

Consider what Ed has told us about how Rebel works. There aren't really any
magic tricks there for the most part. It is mostly an overall system that Ed
created that works well together. A lot of his ideas are pretty straightforward,
and it just takes a lot of hard work to hammer out the details and make it work
right. If you only implement one of his ideas in your program, it may not help
your engine one bit.
