Although it won't play opening lines that are based on very deep analysis and
long historical experience, it will choose reasonably good moves based on sound
chess principles. Sometimes they're better than book! Sometimes not. But the
same can be said of book, which is sometimes faulty too. In my case "it" refers
to Shredder 704 which is what I'm currently using. I also note that some of
Shredder 7 book branching extend well beyond the usual book lines and makes some
excellent recommendations, taking you where no published game has gone
previously! Again, it's not always right, but it's pretty good in general. The
main problem right now is that it's almost 2 years out of date.
