You're right regarding the opening - even going back to the early 1980s (!) this was never an issue. Commercial machines, even then, played good old boring d4 d5 Nf3 Nf6 Bf4 Bf5 ... and similar stuff. (It might be less exciting than Kasparov kicking over the table, but it was sound). The endgame, needless to say, was another matter :) Endgames
