You are setting your hash table MUCH too large. Don't forget that your operating system, the program itself, and whatever else is running take up a lot of memory. The reason things go south is that you are using disk for memory. It is several orders of magnitude slower than "the real thing." Try 32 megs. You might be able to get away with 48 megs. 60 megs is simply out of the question
