In person events are probably a lot of fun, but if you are going to claim that your event is the world championship, let's make sure the winner is really the world champion, and that everyone can participate. We can hold other in person events "for fun", since "fun" seems to be the main advantage of an in person event that I hear over and over. If you are going to call your event the world championship, then at the very least allow for situations where travelling across the world is not reasonable, maybe allowing the partipants from other continents to play via the net.
