US programs with at least some chance to win (on appropriate hardware): Ferret Crafty Zarkov US programs that could throw a good scare into an opponent from time to time: Amateur SlowChess Dorky Insomniac ExChess Arasan I don't think anyone can argue that it will cost a lot more to get there from North or South America than from Europe. Probably costs a lot from Australia too, and Africa. Not a lot of chess engines from those places, but it would be nice if they had better opportunities also. If the only objective is to win or only to invite potential winners, then they may as well restrict it to the professionals. IMO-YMMV.
