ICGA could hold the greatest computer chess tournament in history. Online, everyone can participate, everyone in the world can watch live, prizes for top finishers. Who knows how such an event could turn out. 100 participants? 200? It could be amazing, but I'm not holding my breath. Personally, I wouldn't even mind paying $10-20 for a serious online event and having a decent prize fund for the winner(s). That beats the entry fee for WCCC alone, not to mention travelling and lodging costs. Of course, this can all be done without the backing of the ICGA. The trick is to get everyone to participate. I'm not sure if prizes for the winners is the answer to that or not. Some commercials used to participate in CCTs, but after the automatic play rule, they vanished for some reason. They're willing to spend a few thousand dollars to play in WCCC for nothing, but spending a few hours writing Winboard or UCI code, that's asking too much. We have Rebel this year, which is great. It would still be nice to have more participation from the commercial authors.
