At this current moment, IBM Deep Blue 1997 is the only computer system to beat the worlds highest ranked gm at tournament time controls, So they have nothing more to prove, so why ever play again? no need However, let us assume that Kasparov beat Fritz or Junior. Now IBM has even less of a reason to build a chess computer. If Fritz or Junior beat Kasparov, and then beat Kramnik lets say, would IBM be in danger of having its 'place' taken away as the giant in chess computing? Would they go back and build a chess machine that calculated 5 billion positions a second, or 10? I mean in 6 years these computers have gotten fast, Would there be a 'danger' at this point IBM would draw vs kram..anand..kasparov etc. In my opinion if IBM were to come back another time, I don't think anyone in their right minds would bet on a draw or a win for kasparov.. but the question, will IBM ever 'play' again.
