The 2004 North American CC Internet Championship is intended to, in part, be a prelude to an annual physical North American CC event. The idea is that competitors in the NACCIC will be seeded into later physical events. Perhaps the future events could be hybrids in the sense that some entrants will be on site while the rest will log in from elsewhere. With videochat (I use Apple's iSight camera), those not physically present can still participate somewhat in real time discussions. Of course, remote participants will need sufficient bandwidth and this may not be possible for everyone. On a personal note, I am physically disabled to the point where I would need a travelling companion if an in-the-flesh event were held outside the New England region. This would likely increase my costs to the point of not being able to attend, so I would hope that a remote entry option would be available for any North American events. I would hope that cheating would not be a problem for any event where remote participation is allowed. But, cheating has occured in the past including cheating by commercial entrants. Perhaps there is some sort of technical solution to the problem. Alternatively, there is the option of using source code escrow where a mutually trusted party could verify that a given program really does produce output matching its over-the-net record.
