hello Graham!
It should not open 1 d4  , but 1 e4 it was its lone chance , and not to play
 3 Bb5 , but for instance 3 Bc4!
on 1 ...e5 2 Nf3 Nf6 it could try 3 Nc3 , or 3 Nxe5 d6 4 Nxf7!?
(cochrane gambit)
