The 1995 WCCC event had IBM money in it, if you will investigate.  IBM put
quite a bit of money into ACM events.  IE the last event I played in was the
"ACM International Computer Chess Championship" in cape may, NJ in 1994.  IBM
put up most of the money for that event also, as they did in 1995 in Hong Kong.

I've had it "firsthand" that they would be willing for the right kind of
event.  Not to pay Kasparov 200K to play however.
