The purpose of this notation is to record the board position. It is compact,
and since it is text based, it is portable indeed:
   a) The pieces are represented by letters, Capital letters are White pieces,
small letters are Black pieces,
    b) The numbers represent the empty squares on the board
    c) the slash ( / ) is the end of a row.
     d) You start at the top left square, then proceed to the right till the end
of the row, then you go down to the next row and start again.... till the last
row
      e) at the end you will see either a (w) or (b) to signify if it;s white or
black to move.
Example: the following is the board position when you set it up to start a
game:
   rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR/ -- w

It's like learning the algebraic notation of moves, it's hard at first, but
if you parctice it, it will become second nature. I hope that helps.
