Subject: Should we have a North American CC Association?

Author: Steven Edwards

Date: 15:05:32 11/19/03

Some items:

1. There has been no physical CC event in North America since 1994; the
ICCA/ICGA in that time has helped organize muliple events, mostly in Europe, but
none in the western hemisphere.

2. The Association for Computing Machinery apparently no longer has an interest
in CC, at least not the point of helping to organize or sponsor events in the
US.

3. The United States Chess Federation is in dire financial straits and may not
be around in another year, so it is unlikely to assist with CC events. Indeed,
for the past two decades the USCF has made plenty of cash by selling CC software
and hardware but as far as I can remember has done little to assist with
organizing or sponsoring CC events.

4. Money and other resources that in the past have assisted with North American
CC tournament events appear to have, in part, been switched to one human vs one
machine publicity events that do little to help either existing or aspiring
authors.

----

I propose that if we, the North American CC authors and researchers, continue to
wait for others to resume organizational assistance, then we will be waiting for
a long, long time.

I say that we should establish a North American CC Association. It would
include a website, a journal, and a mandate to organize periodic CC events in
North America for North American authors.
