I agree with Tom.  Nothing says you want to copy what everyone does, but you
sure ought to want to know what they are doing, and find out why.  It can save
years of trial-and-error that has already been done.  Everyone ought to try
new things, but no one ought to start from scratch without having written a
chess program before, because that person will follow in the same steps everyone
else took, making the same mistakes, finding the same good ideas...  and then
a few years later, he reaches the point where he starts looking at something
*really* different...
