Well, WCCC is not about programs but about programs+computers.

Both kind of competitions (SW vs SW and SW+HW vs SW+HW) make sense to me. As a
person who's mainly interested in software, I'm natuerally more interested in
program-program events. It's just that there are none. :) (well, SSDF or these
winboard-engine competitions are like that (it's just they they only support one
platform :p))

I can see some problems with WCCCs and human's weakness to 'oversimplify'. If
Crafty on hardware XYZ wins the WCCC, the winner afterwards will be Crafty,
although in fact it's "Crafty on hardware XYZ". But I consider this 'problem'
small.
