There was a Pascal listing for a program called CHESS 0.5 written by Larry Atkin
(of Chess 4.x fame). It was originally published in BYTE magazine in separate
installments: Vol 3, number 10 (October 1978) pages 182-191, number 11 (November
1978) pages 162-181, bumber 12 (December 1978) pages 140-157 and number 13
(January 1979) pages 126-145.

You can find a reprint in "Computer Games" volume 1, a collection of papers
edited by David Levy. (Springer Verlag, New York 1988, ISBN 0-387-96496-7)

It's only a simple version, but if you want Pascal source, it might make a good
starting point. It's well commented, and there is plenty of prose description of
how it works.

Hope this is useful to you,
Roberto
