The G5 can easily thrash P4EE or even AMD-FX (Opteron) given that the problem is solvable with Altivec and also given that someone has the time to implement using Altivec. I work with DSP and Signal Processing Workstations ... P4 (Xeon) is a mediocre performer compared to the PPC (G4+), note that not only raw speed is important (PPC is faster anyway), but also the power consumption for unit of performance. In some cases where streaming of data is more important, instead of multiple passes over a relatively small chunk of data, the P4 thrashes the PPC even without any specific optimizations.
