I don't know about the historical perspective, but I can speak from my own
experience. My evaluation function has always placed a heavy emphasis on king
safety/exposure - perhaps an unjustibly high emphasis. The results, however, are
frequently rather entertaining. You start to see speculative sacrifices for
attaks on the king, which is not so usual with more modest king safety terms
relative to the value of material. Maybe it would do better if I toned down the
high king safety terms, but I enjoy too much watching it play as it is.
