Most electronics should not be affected by long term connection. If it does, something was probably not built up to par in the first place. It used to be, and I have been away from manufacturing for some time now, the longer the "burned in" period the higher the confidence level everything was built to last. For example, I audited a company that made lead shielded protected PCs for the intelligence community back in the 80's - they had a 72 hour "burned in" period after manufacturing. That was considered much longer than most back then. That also tells you that from the time PCs were first available, intelligence agencies already had electronic devices that could read exactly what was on your monitor from quite a distant (through buildings etc), thus the need for lead protected shields. Search "tempest, pc , security" on google. "tempest" is a U.S. government code word that identifies a classified set of standards for limiting electric or electromagnetic radiation emanations from electronic equipment. Here's a good start: http://www.eskimo.com/~joelm/tempest.html
