I don't know if there has ever been another explainer of chess like him. I havn't yet seen Watson "Modern Chess Strategy" (or whatever it's called), but that might also be great. But I think Nunn is too, e.g. the above book written by him. He makes quite sure you REALLY understand what's going on, and he doesn't leave loose ends, like about everyone else does. He is the first person (or that book is) which doesn't only use advanced chess jargon, but actually explains what HE means by it, and explains also what that jargon might mean in different cases too. When he shows the value of a rook on 7th (or other things), he actually explains why it is powerful, in such a way, that you will also be able to understand when it is NOT powerful. In other words, you learn all the wisdom behind the "rules". Also, he doesn't suddenly say "This is good" "This is bad". He explains all the plusses and miusses of all moves whether they are !,?,!?,?!,!!,?? etc. etc. There's no such thing as it is good "Beacause I-I-I said so", which is the norm in almost ANY other book on chess. Does everyone who has seen this book (or John Nunns great style) agree? S.Taylor
