I am not saying that this happened, but now that the Junior 5 autoplayer also has a problem with letting the opponent save its games, I would have to say that it is worth a few questions on your part to Chessbase. If they told you that they did a complete re-write of the autoplayer code for Junior from Stefan's published source, then it would seem very strange that they would have reversed the save game/new game sequence in doing so. This , especially in light of the previously published complaints of similar behavior in Fritz 5. While the messenger may be biased against Chessbase, and while his method of "speculation" may not be approved by everyone, his message is not therefore automatically untrue. There is enough strangeness, and plausible motive, not to dismiss this out-of-hand as a "sick" interpretation. Since they told you that they had re-written the code based on Stefan's public domain code, could you ask them to publish that section of code for Junior 5 to eliminate "speculation" immediately? There can be no trade secrets involved, if what they told you is true. In fact, Chessbase has brought this inquisition on themselves, with the introduction of a secret autoplayer in the first place. The secrecy was supposed to prevent people from playing Fritz in autoplayer games, and now that they have decided to include it in Fritz6, they would be wise to publish the Fritz 5 source code for the autoplayer, as well. Wise, that is, if things are as you believe them to be. However, if they refuse to publish either, I do not claim this to be prima facie evidence of wrongdoing, merely sufficient "troubling" coincidences to warrant speculation. The ball really is in their court, if this problem is reproducible. Now for the disclaimer: I did not purchase Fritz because of its rating on SSDF. I bought it, in fact, right after someone announced that it had lost several games in a row to Crafty, long before SSDF published their first rating. I bought it for its features, not strength. One feature that was missing, which was important to me, was the autoplayer support. I had already determined to buy Fritz6, when they announced that it would have the autoplayer. But if the autoplayer is not working, then I will not want to purchase it. I do not care what program is on top of the SSDF. I have no vested interest in any other program. I have also not purchased Rebel 10 due to the removal of the autoplayer. I read that Ed is planning on putting out a patch to make it work again, and I will probably buy it if this is done. Thanks, kp
