That is not an easy question, as I don't know what CD version you have. There
appears to be a few. i have Fritz 8.0.0.8 fom my CD. Although I was not happy
with the engine version (8.0.0.23) it was converted to, there were some
important changes to the GUI. Some changes were for your true 3D settings. Such
as the option to have the knights look left or right or diagonally left or
right. There are others I am sure. I know that Fritz8 used to take forever on my
Windows XP Professional with 1 Gig of RAM to shut down at times, but that
stopped after the upgrade.
The latest upgrade seems to take away the option of using the keys n or m to
lower or raise the true 3d board. Also, the menu View will no longer show "true
3D" as an option, it will just show "3D..." which is the same.
I wasn,t happy with the new engine 8.0.0.23 as I felt 8.0.0.8 was stronger and I
know that 8.0.0.23 did have a capturing on e4 problem whereas the program at
least with black to move would avoid capturing on e4 even when it was clearly
the best move. Fritz 8.0.0.8 and other engines (Crafty, Hiarcs8, Fritz7
etc.)would all play the capture immediately.
For me the new upgrade corrected that immediately. I am now setting up new
positions involving captures on e4.
What I am finding is that it may be the correction to the GUI that affects this
capture as my SAVED for starage copies of 8.0.0.23 now make the correct capture
as well. THE UPGRADE COULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN TO THEM.
The BEST advice I can give you is to SAVE ALL your engines by making COPIES and
put them elsewhere for safekeeping. I create separate FOLDER for each version I
wish to copy and label the Folder as such. Then you can just rename your engine
folder with something like Aengines or Bengines or Cengines or MainEngines etc.
and create a new folder named Engines. Then you copy and paste (not cut and
paste)the version you wish to test. When done with your test you can just delete
it from the new Engines folder since you still have a copy saved. Once you are
done with your comparisons you can simply delete or rename your new engines
folder and rename your original Engines folder back to Engines. At that point
you can decide whether or not you wish to keep or add or remove a particular
engine from the folder.
However you go about doing this, you may find much simpler ways for
yourself..........Always save a copy/copies of the engine you are going to
upgrade.
