On Chessbase's site (http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=1319) a report from the Daily Telegraph was quoted, in which Fritz 8 was given a position with a pawn blockade and had to avoid accepting Black's rook sacrifice. [D] 6kr/5b1p/2p3pP/rpPp1pP1/pP1PpP2/P3P3/1K6/8 w bxa5 loses the game, but White can get a draw by shuffling his king around. According to the article Fritz wants to take the rook, but given enough time changes his mind. I'm not sure what "enough time" means, because on my 733 MHz PC Fritz still insisted on bxa5 after two hours. David Norwood bought four chess programs, namely Fritz 8, Hiarcs 9, Deep Junior 7 and Chess Tiger 15. None of these programs avoid bxa5 within 15 minutes. He should have added Shredder 7 to his shopping list, because Shredder never even considers the losing move: Analysis by Shredder 7.04: 1.Ka2 ³ (-0.28) Depth: 1/1 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 ³ (-0.30) Depth: 2/2 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 ³ (-0.31) Depth: 3/3 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Rf8 5.Kc2 Kd7 6.Kc1 Re8 7.bxa5 Be6 8.Kc2 Ke7 9.Kd2 Kf8 10.Kc2 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 4/4 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Be6 2.Kb2 Ra8 ³ (-0.32) Depth: 5/5 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 6/7 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Kd8 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 7/7 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 8/9 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 9/9 00:00:00 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Re8 6.Kb2 Rf8 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 10/11 00:00:00 1kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Re8 6.Kb2 Rf8 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 11/11 00:00:00 1kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Re8 6.Kb2 Rf8 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 12/13 00:00:00 2kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Re8 6.Kb2 Kd7 7.Ka2 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 13/13 00:00:00 3kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Re8 6.Kb2 Kd7 7.Ka2 Rb8 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 14/15 00:00:00 4kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Kd7 6.Ka1 Re8 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 15/15 00:00:00 5kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Kd7 6.Ka1 Re8 7.Ka2 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 16/16 00:00:00 8kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Kd7 6.Ka1 Re8 7.Ka2 Kd8 8.Kb2 Kc8 9.Kb1 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 17/17 00:00:00 12kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Kd7 6.Ka1 Re8 7.Ka2 Kd8 8.Kb2 Kc8 9.Ka2 Rf8 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 18/19 00:00:00 17kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Kd7 6.Ka1 Re8 7.Ka2 Kd8 8.Kb2 Kc8 9.Ka2 Rf8 10.Kb2 Re8 11.Ka2 Rf8 12.Kb2 Re8 13.Ka2 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 19/19 00:00:00 24kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Kd7 6.Ka1 Re8 7.Ka2 Kd8 8.Kb2 Kc8 9.Ka2 Rf8 10.Kb2 Kc7 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 20/21 00:00:01 35kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ke8 3.Ka2 Be6 4.Kb2 Ke7 5.Ka2 Kd7 6.Ka1 Re8 7.Ka2 Kd8 8.Kb2 Kc8 9.Ka2 Rf8 10.Kb2 Kc7 11.Kc2 Bf7 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 21/21 00:00:01 52kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb1 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 22/23 00:00:01 121kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb1 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.Kc2 Ra8 7.Kd2 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 23/23 00:00:01 136kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 24/25 00:00:01 183kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 25/25 00:00:01 224kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 26/26 00:00:02 279kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 27/27 00:00:02 333kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 28/28 00:00:02 403kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 29/29 00:00:02 446kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 30/30 00:00:03 569kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 31/31 00:00:03 710kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 32/32 00:00:04 901kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 33/33 00:00:05 1121kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 34/34 00:00:06 1293kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 35/35 00:00:07 1627kN 1.Ka2 Kf8 2.Kb2 Ra8 3.Kc1 Ke7 4.Kd2 Ra5 5.Kc1 Kf8 6.bxa5 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 36/36 00:00:08 2011kN 1.Kc2 Kf8 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 36/36 00:00:09 2105kN 1.Kc2 Kf8 2.bxa5 Ke7 3.a6 Kf8 4.a7 Ke7 5.a8N ³ (-0.33) Depth: 36/36 00:00:09 2154kN 1.Kc2 Kf8 2.Kd2 Ke7 3.Kc1 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 37/37 00:00:11 2744kN 1.Kc2 Kf8 2.Kd2 Ke7 3.Kc1 Kd7 4.Kd2 Raa8 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 38/38 00:00:13 3349kN 1.Kc2 Kf8 2.Kd2 Ke7 3.Kc1 Kd7 4.Kd2 Raa8 5.Kc1 Ke7 ³ (-0.34) Depth: 39/39 00:00:18 5163kN 1.Kc2 Kf8 2.Kc1 Ke7 3.bxa5 Kd7 4.Kd2 Rf8 5.Kc2 ³ (-0.33) Depth: 40/41 00:00:29 9213kN 1.Kc2 Kf8 2.Kc1 Ke7 3.Kd2 Rf8 4.Kc1 ³ (-0.38) Depth: 41/41 00:00:38 11852kN 1.Kc1 Kf8 ³ (-0.37) Depth: 41/43 00:00:40 12191kN 1.Kc1 Kf8 2.bxa5 Ke7 3.Kc2 Kd7 4.a6 Ke7 5.Kb1 ³ (-0.37) Depth: 41/43 00:00:40 12191kN 1.Kc1 Kf8 2.Kc2 Ke7 3.Kc1 Kd7 4.Kd2 ³ (-0.38) Depth: 42/42 00:00:49 14825kN
