I don't own one so I can only guess for a reason.  First of all, Chessmaster
will do the same thing if you are playing the ChessMaster personality I believe.
 If they are using a simple formula for rating you will end up about 400 points
below the rating of the player you are playing even if you lose 90% of the time.
 In ChessMaster of course you can play a 1500 rated personality and when you
lose your rating will go down and when you win your rating will go up like
normal.  Meaning that if you play personalities near your actual rating it will
act very normal.  If you play ChessMaster which is rated at 2800 and you lose
you may get a 2400 rating at first.  Again this is because of the simple formula
used. (I think)
