In addition to generation of the last few plies, which is done by the additional
chips, the hardware ewxtension is basically used to do a complex evaluation
without performance penalty.

For sure, Donninger and his team had to create and fine-tune the evaluation
software which is run on the chips. So, Brutus is essentially a software
project, although using more than the standard hardware.
