For me beating tscp was no big problem after I had a chess program.

The main problem was to write my complicated legal move generator and improving
the speed of it.

After I developed it to a chess program it was immediately at similiar level to
tscp inspite of the fact that I had only piece square table evaluation and no
null move pruning.
