Subject: Junior-Crafty hardware user experiment - 5th game

Author: Peter Berger

Before the match I wondered how a won game for Junior was most likely to look
like. Game 2 already gave a clue, but it ended as a draw.

Game 5 was the most interesting one so far. Crafty chose a Bird setup that
turned out to be a good choice.
Junior out of book early had trouble to find a good plan. 6...Bf5?! looks much
like a computer move.
The position at move 15 should favor White.

17. Rf2?! that creates some ugly self-bind was no good idea though and probably
spoilt any advantage - why not just 17. Kh1 ?

At move 20 Junior was forced to give a pawn. Here is the only point where it is
easy for a humble human to notice an inaccuracy as 20...Bc8 has to be more exact
than 20...Bd7. I also don't really understand what would make the latter look
more attractive for a program.

So we got the common theme of the match again - space advantage vs pawn.

Again programs disagreed heavily (more than a pawn difference in eval) and both
thought they were better.

This time Crafty was clearly wrong IMHO - for example at move 29 it still showed
a positive eval when it is already in serious trouble.

[D]3r4/5kb1/1qp3pp/p2n1p2/P4P2/2P4N/1P2Q1PP/R1B4K b - - 0 1

Crafty stayed pretty relaxed for quite some time while Junior slowly squeezed
it, followed by a king side attack.

For this spectator it was fascinating to watch how Junior resisted the
temptation to win back material early several times to not give Crafty
counterchances.
If there were missed chances for Crafty to save itself somewhere I don't know.

Quite a game by Junior.

(all comments without any warranty at all of course)

Standing: Junior 1 - Crafty 1 ( 3 draws)
