Could the simplest answer be that the Programs in competition now were designed
to be used with opening books? (eg why use tires on race cars?)
I want to add that if some new rule were enacted to change this-- would the
opening book not become part of the code of engines, book cookers would be
opening programmers-- and the consumer would suffer with a less componentialized
-- less customizable-- product?
