IMHO, the best resource of them all is Ed Schröder's page:

http://members.home.nl/matador/chess840.htm

The information is not quite complete, and Ed seems to have stopped updating
it, but even in its current stage it contains more valuable information than
any other resource I have seen.

Although I share your preference for books, I haven't read any. I have
seen other people recommend the book "Scalable Search in Computer Chess"
by Ernst A. Heinz.

I am not a "programmer" in any sense of the word, and I am not even sure
I like programming in general. But even so, I find chess programming
to be great fun. It is also not nearly as difficult as most beginners
believe. Writing something that plays legal moves and beats the majority
of human amateur players is a relatively easy (though time-consuming)
programming task.
