Hey Ricardo,

An approach that worked well for me:

firstly i just read what minimax and alpha beta were, and then hacked up a chess
engine off the top of my head...didnt take too long, about 3 weeks, few hours
every day or so...

this beast regurlarly searched 5-6 plies in the middle game at long time
controls...luck based move ordering! :)

why i took this approach was that i wanted to get a practical feel for the
problems involved in making a chess engine...after doing this, i was able to
design my next chess engine from scratch with a better sense of what i actually
wanted to achieve (perhaps more than what you get after just reading someelse's
source code)...

maybe a simple hacked up engine might be best if you are not yet a good
programmer...you will definately improve a lot after you work your way through
the problems writing a chess engine throws at you.
