OK - I'll answer the first part.

a.) How to start Windows ME in DOS Mode?

If you press ->Start->Shutdown-> you can choose restart in DOS mode then (my
Windows version is German so the entries will only have similar names).

This is a way to play MChess with optimal hash settings e.g.

b.) How to start Windows ME is protected mode?

When you turn on your computer press the F8 button , then choose start Windows
in protected mode from the list.

This is the(one) way to start Hiarcs or Genius with big hashtables

When it is about loading the drivers for mouse and CD-ROM this is usually done
by a Load or LH entry in either autoexec.bat or config.sys, but you can also do
it from the command line.

For your mouse there is a good chance that you find tips how to do that in its
manual. When it is about the CD-ROM driver I am sceptical - but as you only need
it for the regular copy protection check, you can do that in Windows ME and then
start the program again in DOS mode when it won't ask for a CD.

Answering the general DOS questions here is a bit too off-topic and I am also
not the right person to do it.

Hope some of this still helps.
Peter
