There has been many bulletins posted here recently about the banning of a chess engine programmer from a computer chess tournament. Why? Here are a few reasons. Maybe there are others. (1) Many of the people here are chess engine programmers. They have to be concerned that they, too, may be banned and unfairly labeled as "cheaters." The possibility of this happening may be enough to cause some of them to not go to tournaments known for such unfriendly behavior. (2) In view of the fact that most engine programmers will not wish to reveal their source code [IMHO], any tournament which requires the revealation of that code must be viewed in a negative way by those programmers. (3) The stated idea that the tournament organizers feel that they owe it to the complainer to report back to him is patently wrong. This raises concerns in the minds of the programmers that they may be treated unfairly. Generally, the tournament organizers may have done themselves more harm than good. Bob D.
