Crafty is already very strong in the areas that Hyatt is especially skilled and interested in, and weak in areas that Hyatt is weak in, and areas that he doesn't think about needing improved. This is part of the power of open source, that different people have different strengths, and each can contribute in their area of strength. The one thing that makes this bet especially risky I think is that Hyatt has already gotten feedback from many people regarding the crafty code, so there are likely less in the way of weak spots than a purely closed source program would have.
