Maybe I did the missunderstanding :)

I expected you to use these pgn-files in a bookcreateor utility for your engine.
Then I advice you to rewrite the pgn-reader to allow variation in a game.
I do this, and couldn't think of any other options if I want to create a
hand-made openingbook. It is much simpler to add a new move 20 in a long
variation then rewrite the hole game upto your new move and then add the move.
My tournament book are with about 140 games sorted by opening, but inside each
game there are several variation. Ex. advanced variation in Caro Kann (1.e4 c6
2.d4 d5 3.e5) get one game, but inside this game I cover all variation after
whites third move.
