Now that everybody is happy with the idea of having GUIs which are really executives and not user interfaces, the next logical step is to have: MULTI-ENGINE chess-playing programs. After all, the current "GUIs" are deciding between the main engine and tablebase "engine," so it is a small step forward to have other multi-engine combinations. I forsee "GUIs" which are at least as big as present-day chess engines. They will orchestrate multi-engine "orchestras" and really create a lot of sophisticated chess "music." The GUI of the future will be charged with the task of identifying and acting upon long-range considerations such as developing attacks [and defending against enemy buildups] and dealing with complex positional and strategic issues. As in a human orchestra, each "engine" will have it's own special role. There may be a "violin engine," a "trombone engine," a "clarinet engine," a "drum engine," and all the rest. Truly, it may take 10GB of RAM just to hold the entire orchestra. [If fewer than ten engines, we can call it an "ensemble."] Clearly, Chessbase will produce this "GUI to end all GUIs." They will have a lock on the market. : ) Why not? Bob D.
