The difference here is that you (presumably) are a self-contained entity. As
such, you don't need the TD to tell you when a threefold occurs. The engine,
however, is not a self-contained entity...it runs in an interface, or shell,
that is specifically intended to handle certain mundane functions, so that the
engine authors can better concentrate on developing the logic of their engine.
