It doesn't matter whether a certain action was carried out by the engine or by
the GUI. For example, in the UCI protocol (which most participants of WCCC used)
declaring threefold repetition is the duty of the interface. I believe that both
the engine and the interface should be regarded as "one chess playing unit".
