I don't think the protocols are proprietary.  FICS protocols are similar, if not
identical and the software is open source.  It does not matter if ICC is
private, as long as the protocols and software are open.

Bob even suggested that future WCCC use the FICS software on a local server to
run the tourney, whick is a stellar idea, IMO.  :)
