If we were to hold an event in North Birmingham, I would suggest flak jackets. They average a murder (drive-by drug-related shooting) every day there... > >If you don't want to participate in any event outside Alabama, that's fine, just >say it. Please read what I write. I have stated _many_ times that the reasons I don't attend WCCC/WMCCC events are, in order of precedence: 1. The events are _way_ too long. By the time you factor in travel half- way around the world, it turns into 1.5 weeks. 1.5 weeks at a university is two weeks worth of classes, basically. 2. The cost. For events that long, figure at least $2,000.00 US and that is _very_ iffy. Air fare would be maybe $1,500 round trip. Rooms are probably $100 per night. Add $30 per day for food and you are up to almost $3,000. 3. The timing. In the middle of a school term, it is a no go because of (1). If it were shorter, and held (say) sat/sun/mon/tue, with the early rounds (does a WCCC _really_ need more than 8 rounds? Hardly) maybe played over the internet so when we arrive we are 3-4 rounds into the event to keep away time to a managable amount. The time is tough for me. The cost is non-trivial. And it is really not worth the expense/trouble. Those are the reasons I haven't attended anything since the last ACM event. And yes, I have been _way_ outside "Alabama" regardless of what you think. From London to Canada to everywhere in the US, all chess-related. But the events are too long, period. > But don't give stupid excuses, especially that you know very well that >New York has been the primary victim of global terrorism, and that visiting >Tel-Aviv is not any more dangerous than visiting New York. Wrong answer. How many times has NY been attacked? Once? How many busses have you had explode over there? dozens? Hundreds? There is a big difference in frequency, thank you very much. I attended an ACM event in Washington DC. Not a favorite place of mine. A competitor was robbed at gunpoint in the area right out side the tournament hall. Danger exists everywhere. But it is more pronounced in Israel at the moment, than most anywhere else in the world. Note that is _not_ a put-down or anything else, just a statement of fact. There are dangerous places everywhere. But logic says Israel is not the place to visit while the Middle-East is boiling over...
