Subject: Differences between Opteron and Athlon 64

From what I can gather from AMD's website, the only real difference between any
of AMD's 64-bit CPUs is the memory bandwidth (more or less). I believe that
memory bandwidth has not typically been a very important issue for chess
programs (rather, the latency of the memory accesses is more important).

For a single CPU machine, is any model of the Opteron/Athlon64 better than the
others? Or should you just go for the cheapest model (assuming they are equally
clocked)?

What about for multi-cpu machines? Does the memory bandwidth come into play
there?

I'd like to build one sometime soon and use the machine for my bitboard chess
program, but also some general purpose use. If anyone could recommend which CPU
to get for a single CPU machine, and also which one to get for a dual, I would
appreciate it.
