I guess the difference between Europeans and Americans is not so much the time of the plane-ride (it adds little to the many days the tournament is being held) but the fact that Europeans usually have much more vacation than Americans. My SO from the US officially has two weeks of vacation, whereas I have six. That's a _big_ difference. While I can imagine to take 2 weeks off from work in order to go to a chess tournament (be it in Europe, Asia, America or somewhere else) it would be more or less impossible for her. I think it is a completely different personal experience to attend a 1.5 week tournament as opposed to a 3-4 day tournament. I understand why Europeans wouldn't want to change that too much. And I see why Americans have a problem here. The obvious solution seems to be that they have different tournaments. (although that sadly means, that Europeans and Americans almost never meet) But if there is more than one tournament, the one in Europe shouldn't be called WCCC. (that's probably a minor point for amateurs but could be a major point for professionals) Sargon
